THE STORY OF THELMA & STANLEY BUSH

Thelma and Stanley were teenage sweethearts, bound together by love and a shared appreciation for life's fleeting moments. Stanley, a talented photographer, documented their world through his lens, preserving glimpses of their lives in delicate negatives.

Decades later, I discovered Stanley’s negative folders at a car boot sale, labeled with the name Bush. Intrigued, I turned to my local Canterbury History group, hoping to uncover their story. It wasn’t long before I learned that the Bush family was well known in the area. Through the kindness of strangers, I was connected with Thelma’s long-lost cousin, Frieda, who helped piece together their history.

Thelma was born Thelma Bubb, the daughter of Robert Bubb. She later married Stanley, taking his surname, but tragically, her life was cut short. She had a sister, Sybil Bubb, whose own story remains part of the family’s legacy.

Though Thelma's time was brief, her love story with Stanley lives on through his photographs—moments frozen in time, waiting to be rediscovered.
